Your problem is the laptop here then. Compaq hasn't been a computer brand for a number of years now I think. It's probably just too old. It will work, but it won't be a speed demon.
I am into the 4th hour of watching the DEBIAN download/unpack/install/Crap/I'll/Never/Use !
This defeats the whole purpose of "on-line" software.
Granted, I could have simply down-loaded the DEBIAN.iso, burned a dvd, install it,
then spend 4hours removing C/I/N/U !
Oh... unpacking SPEECH-DISPATCHER... GrandMa really needs that on this old Compaq laptop ;>(
Is there anyway to stop/pause/kill this nonsense ?
The best good-smart-idea is buy her a new Apple.
Hard Reset.
Or perhaps you want help with installing Debian? Or just here to rant and necro?

Agreed. Though my Compaq Cq57 laptop with dual cores might argue that point about speed
Posting myself to just let the OP know AntiX 21 Full 64 bit iso takes me 30 minutes to install, and Updating packages, Running dpkg-reconfigure locales, sensors-detect, . Took about another 30 minutes for me. Debian Buster repos. NosystemD. Up to you for a old supposed Compaq.https://sourceforge.net/projects/ant...inal/antiX-21/
Usually takes me about 30 mins to install with mostly standard settings. Post installation the update to the latest versions (apt-get dist-upgrade) can take a while depending on your internet connection speed.

If you don't want 'crap' to be installed choose the custom option and select a minimal install.
I have no idea where you downloaded the ISO from and when was the last time you installed it, because I was never forced to do this. In a base/net install only the stuff required to get the OS up and running is installed, and the rest can be installed later. If you do a full install you can still choose the packages to be installed.

Yes, read the instructions on screen before clicking next.

Nah, I am good with Linux where I am not spending a ton of money just to get a computer that looks pretty but tries to restrict what you do with it.
I just installed Debian 11.5 (then converted to unstable) on a brand new SSD installed in a 13-year old desktop (amd64). The 11.5 install took no more than 10-15 minutes. I think the time it takes to install is dependent on the speed of the CPU and HDD/SSD.
Hey Edward thanks for that common sense input – I too have just installed Debian amd64 with non free added iso on my 2013 Dell Latitude E6420 i7.
I started to install at 16:29 on the 24th February and by 16:31 had completed the user details page and took a picture with my phone. At 16:32 I took another picture of the Summary page, taking another picture at 16:33 as the installation proper began by unpacking the image and copying files. At 16:40 I took the picture of the finish “All done” screen. So all in all the installation took about 10 minutes or less considering the time to open my phone and take pictures or if you want to be pedantic 7 minutes of actual installation.
