Question How do I shutdown xserver?

I just finished installing Debian via the net install. I want to install the nvidia driver. I do a ctrl-alt-f1 which takes me out of KDE and to my terminal prompt. I type init 3 and then attempt to install the nvidia driver. When the nvidia install starts it states that the x server is still running. How do I go about shutting it down? Thanks!
