HappyTux, my debian install does not have a /etc/resolv.conf file.
Should i create one?
Most definitely otherwise you will have no way to get an address other than using the numeric address of the server. If you are using the dhcp for the connection this file should be created when you get the lease otherwise for static settings you need to do it manually when installing or after the install here is what it can look like you would need to have the numbers provided by your ISP or search on the internet for "free nameservers dns".
I'm using this in my interfaces file, maybe because I have resolvconf (don't know if its standard..), otherwise everytime I ifup, /etc/resolv.conf gets erased
Code:
# dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if installed
dns-nameservers 1.1.1.55 1.1.1.56
dns-search my.corp

First before checking your dns, when you do /sbin/ifconfig you do have an ip adress? (169.x.x.x is not a valid adress)
Did you change /etc/resolv.conf after putting the interface up? I remembered once when I was on dhcp that a misconfiguration caused my /etc/resolv.conf to be erased as soon as the dhclient was launched
