How do I set up Debian to access the internet?

I have just installed a debian based system, Agnula/Demudi butI can not access the internet.

I did get DHCP error when I installed the system. IT said:

Your network is probably not using the dhcp protocol. Alternatively, the DHCP server may be slow or some network hardware is not working properly.

So I told it not to configure the network.

My system is working but I can not access the internet.

I also have Xubuntu installed and these are both able to access the internet.

Is there some file that I can cut and paste into my debian system?

Thanks for your help.

Assuming you do have dhcp and you only have one nic, add/change the following in /etc/network/interfaces

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

You will want to look at the /etc/resolv.conf file on the working install as well to make sure the nameservers are right.

Most definitely otherwise you will have no way to get an address other than using the numeric address of the server. If you are using the dhcp for the connection this file should be created when you get the lease otherwise for static settings you need to do it manually when installing or after the install here is what it can look like you would need to have the numbers provided by your ISP or search on the internet for "free nameservers dns".

Code:
>$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 24.222.0.66
nameserver 24.222.0.91

I'm using this in my interfaces file, maybe because I have resolvconf (don't know if its standard..), otherwise everytime I ifup, /etc/resolv.conf gets erased

Code:
# dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if installed
dns-nameservers 1.1.1.55 1.1.1.56
dns-search my.corp

Same for me.

Sorry people, but I am a bit lost here.

I created /etc/resolv.conf file with the following line in it:

namserver 192.168.1.1

which is the address of my router.

This is what the resolv.conf file in my other distros says.

But I still can not acces the internet.

Can someone guide me what I need to do please.

First before checking your dns, when you do /sbin/ifconfig you do have an ip adress? (169.x.x.x is not a valid adress)

Did you change /etc/resolv.conf after putting the interface up? I remembered once when I was on dhcp that a misconfiguration caused my /etc/resolv.conf to be erased as soon as the dhclient was launched

And btw, it's nameserver

If Xubuntu is working, make your Debian /etc/resolv.conf file = Xubuntu's.
