How do I Set up Debian on a ReiserFS Root Partition?
 

I recently did an installation from my Debian 3.0 r0 i386 CD. I was planning on having my root fs on a ReiserFS partition. I couldn't find ReiserFS in the cfdisk at the beginning of the installation so I thought I'd be able to change from ext2 to ReiserFS easily later on. From this forum, though, I learned I was wrong about that. Due to my partition scheme reinstallation of my system shouldn't take more than a 2-3 hours at most and I'm willing to make that sacrifice just to get ReiserFS on my root partition... now if only I had any idea how to do that.

So, how exactly do I install Debian to a ReiserFS partition? I'm thinking this should be possible since statistics show ReiserFS to be far superior to ext3, as far as I know. Am I missing something really simple here, or what? I just checked again, and there was no option for a ReiserFS file system in the hard disk partitioning part of the installation. Could someone please clarify this stuff to me?

After the part of the installation that you partition the disk, you will get prompted to initialize the partition(s). You will have a choice of choosing ext2, ext3, or reiserfs.

With CD 1, you have to write at the boot prompt:

bf24

in order to install the kernel 2.4 which will allow you to have reiserfs or Ext3, OR insert CD5 and then switch to CD 1 when instructed to do so . Either way will give you kernel 2.4 .

All this is explained on the first screen in Help.

Otherwise, if you only use CD 1 without writing 'bf24' you end up with kernel 2.2 who only has Ext 2.

Once you got 2.4, after using cfdisk, when you come to the partitions' mounting, you can choose reiserfs or Ext3.
