how do i Remaster my debian based distro to a newer kernel version

hi,

I am using BOSSLinux, its a Debian based distro. Its running kernel 2.4.21, can i upgrade the distribution to kernel 2.6.25 myself? I am trying to make iso installable cd with the newest stable kernel. is it possible? hope remastering is the right term.

thanks :)

Remastering is the right term, assuming that you mean cutting a new CD with some files replaced by others.

I haven't tried this - never even booted BOSSLinux, so my comments may not have much value - but, my initial guess is that this may be a bit more than trivial. That is, there have been a fair few kernel changes between a late 2.4.x and a pretty much current kernel, so it is easy to imagine that a fair few things may not work. OTOH, it is easy enough to try so it might be worth a go. Maybe the things that change don't break anything that you need...

most liveCDs are similar and most any remaster guide should be somewhat applicable

unpack the ISO
unpack the squashfs
chroot into the squashfs
make your changes
repack the squash
repack the ISO
done
