How do I install Tracker on Etch...

I REALLY REALLY need to install Tracker on Etch....I've just switched from
Ubuntu n im really enjoying Debian's speed n stability.

But I really need Tracker for desktop search (Tried Google desktop it didn't suit my needs nor does Beagle).

Now tracker is in lenny n sid but not etch or etch backports.

I don't want to n can't upgrade to lenny given my slow limited connection. Don't wanna mix trees either.....

I tried compiling from source but ended up with errors....it asks me to install Pango although I do have libpango installed.

I dunno what to do..plz help me in this regard.

Thank you.

Guess you could start with explaining what this Tracker is. Also, you say it's in Lenny and Sid, have you looked into backports and see if it's there?

Not trying to be rude or flip, but if there is no Etch .deb, then your choices are limited. Probably the easiest is through the tarball: http://www.gnome.org/projects/tracker/download.html

I've not tried it personally, but KPackage may have the ability to handle the tarball; else, you're in for a CLI session.

The difficult & public spirited way would to do the back port.

If you could find an appropriate .rpm, then alien might work for you.

Please post how you resolve this, it looks like a very useful pkg.
