I hope this helps you and me in determining what is the proper way to install Nvidia Driver 169.12-x86_64 for kernel 2.6.18-6-amd64? So can any of you help me with this issue? Because, i'm tired of destroying my Hdd...Thanks for helping...

Install gcc, make and linux-source that match your kernel version. Then open a console :

Code:

su
init 1              <==screen going black, console mode, give root password
cd /home/your_user  <==in the case you saved the nvidia installer in there...
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run

Answer a few questions, basically you need to say "ok" or "yes", except for trying to donwload a pre-compiled module from nvidia's website which is going to fail.

When you are done reboot. That's the "quick and ugly" way.

There's a "debian way" to do it, it's more reliable and cleaner :

Be sure to have the non-free repository in your source.list (must look like deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free ), then open a console as root :

Code:

apt-get install module-assistant
m-a prepare
m-a a-i -i nvidia-kernel-source
apt-get install nvidia-glx

When done edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (need root privileges), Look for the Section "Device" and change the line Driver "nv" to Driver "nvidia".

Reboot.

Install the driver like this,

apt-get install module-assistant
m-a prepare
m-a a-i -i nvidia-kernel-source
apt-get install nvidia-glx Then i
sh Nvidia-Linux driver

Is that the way to install it? thveillon, what is make and how do i install it?

thveillon 05-05-2008 02:23 PM

No, I gave you two different ways to install the driver, the first one uses the nvidia-blablabla.run you've downloaded from nvidia's website, that's the first method (quick and ugly).

The second one uses a tool named "module-assitant" (m-a), it goes with the nvidia driver available with apt-get (synaptic if you use this software as a graphic interface). This two methods are different, and must not be used together !! I would recommend going with the second one (module-assistant), particularly on an etch install.

Don't worry about "make" and such if you go with "module-assistant", just install it with

Code:

apt-get update
apt-get install module-assistant

as root and then run the commands i gave you ("m-a" is short for "module-assistant" on the command line, "a-i" option means "auto-install", the process will take care of the dependencies you need, just be sure you have non-free repository in your /etc/apt/sources.list file.

If you want to use the first method with the nvidia's website installer you must install make, gcc and linux-source-2.6.18-6-amd64 with apt-get before doing the "sh NVIDIA-blablabla.run" thing.

So choose one method, don't mix both.

Good luck, may the apt-get force be with you ! ;)

you may also need build-essential.. I would change that second line to:

aptitude install build-essential module-assistant

no big deal if it's already installed.. that's the beauty of Debian's package management

thveillon 05-05-2008 04:10 PM

Then he'll need an "apt-get install aptitude" first... ;)

I don't use build-essential because it messes with the /usr/bin/gcc symlink which I don't like, but it's a way to throw in make and gcc, not linux-source though.

I know you all want to help, and that's a noble goal, but before you put too much energy into beating this dead horse, you may want to consider this.
