How do i install Gnash v.0.8.3 on Debian Etch amd64?

I did what you should have done. I went to google.com and entered the search phrase Linux gnash. That brought me to a wikipedia page which brought me to the gnash project pages. From here I was able to learn that gnash has been shown to run on Debian amd64. So far so good.

Then I went to the Debian web site and looked in its software package repository for the Etch distribution. I found that gnash is not there.

Returning to the gnash web site I found that the application is primarily distributed by source code although there is a Fedora 8 rpm.

So when I first read your post I knew less than you did about gnash since I didn't know what it was. Within a few minutes I was able to find the answer to your question. You would benefit if you learned these research skills.

You could also improve your questions by including more information and improving the friendliness of the tone. Your terse original post is offensive. Your follow up whining post is repulsive. Both posts lack a friendly and respectful tone.

First, you wait more than an hour for a reply. Then, you slowly carefully read stress_junkie's post and learn, because he has gone out of his way to teach you when he could have been so much more terse.

There is a version for debian testing and unstable. You might want to use then a mixed stable/testing system but this has huge consequences.

And (as a stable gnash probably arrived after Etch arrived) the testing version has been now rebuilt against dependencies in Etch (so called backport) so that you can keep your system full-Etch.

So, there is a packaged version of 0.8.2 for amd64 etch, you'll need to add the backport repo:

if you really need 0.8.3, use a testing/unstable version. The backport is probably not possible or 0.8.3 is considered too unstable (in the debian-sense). See this : http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=gnash

I did as you suggested and downloaded all the files pertaing to Gnash 0.8.2 related to Debian Etch amd64...Now, How do i install it? Understand this, i may sound like i'm whining; Yet, did it ever occurred to you "stress" that i'm only 3 months old when it comes to Debian Linux and i have much to learn...My background is in Windows XP64 bit...

Again can any of you provide instructions on how to install it?

You know what binary packages are? They are pre-compiled softwares. Unless this binary does not fit to you, there is absolutely no need for compiling yourself.

I love this operating system, is just that my background is in Windows xp64. I'm barely getting used to the Debian way, when it comes to installing software and everything else...Again, Thanks a lot...My only wish is that there was a how to installing Gnash on Debian Etch amd64...Thanks again...

I'm glad that backport.org looks promising.

Ubuntu has a gnash installation deb file. That should work on Debian. Install it using the dpkg utility.

Copy the deb file to your local disk then use dpkg -i <file>.deb to install the package.

I didn't know this when I first wrote or I would have put it in my first post. I found this since I last posted in this thread.

I haven't tried it. I just found this today and I don't run Debian.

You really shouldn't recommend something if you have no idea whether it will work or not. In general, it's not a good idea to mix .debs from different distros, since the distros may not be binary compatible.

I'm not, i repeat not trying to be confrotational; I'm simply trying to install Gnash on my Debian Etch amd64...Since, i gave up windows, i will not associate myself with anything that represents it; And, I prefer to have a true Linux System. With that said, i rather support Linux in everyway possible. Again, i'm not trying to be confrontational i'm asking for your help...

My first inclination is to say "If you think that was confrontational, you ain't seen nothing yet."

More seriously, I wasn't being confrontational either. I was just pointing out (1) that it's a bad idea to give advice when you don't know what will happen and (2) that it's a bad idea to mix Debian and non-Debian .debs on a Debian system. See, no confrontation at all.
