High memory usage

Hi,

I have now install Debian Sarge for my first time. I have also installed kernel 2.6.8-2-686 and the nvidia-drivers needed for my graphic card. So far so good.

The problem is, that im experiencing a massive memory usage. I'm running Gnome 2.8.2 , but that seems not to be the reason, running fluxbox, i also get a very high memory usage.

Could you give me a few tips how to get memory usage lower? I did not expect more memory usage than under windows.

Could it be, that after the base installation a huge bunch of programmes have been installed, and are running , although they are unnecessary?

Thank you all very much in advice.

Here a couple of numbers after typing "free" under gnome with firefox and a terminal running:
  • total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 256748 251860 4888 0 8796 137292
    -/+ buffers/cache: 105772 150976
    Swap: 433712 720 432992

and here ps -aux:

Linux uses memory different from windows while it reserves almost all memory right at bootup. The whole memory isn't in actual use, it's just reserved.

After a while if've read this thread:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=319515

which says that Free Available memory = cached memory + buffer memory + non cached free memory.

Thanks for the reply.

I am also having high memory use.I running sarge and have upgraded to kernel 2.6. I was thinking it would use memory better but it lowered it a little bit.
I switched from ubuntu hoary to sarge. In using ubuntu memory usage was low like around 85 megs to start with. But sarge right off the bat 145 megs easy.
Possible problem here with memory.

http://www.tldp.org/LDP/tlk/mm/memory.html

Have a look at that for detailed explanation.

Linux may use most of your memory all the time, but when new things come about that require memory it is taken and then divided equally as needed.

darkleaf 07-29-2005 09:35 AM

No need to worry about your memory when you use linux :) It'll manage it all ok !

THanks that does make things clear.
