Help with XF86Config-4 on Debian

I decided to convert my old Dell Optiplex PIII550 256 SDRAM, Integrated AGP ATI 3D Rage Pro 2X to a personal Linux training station :-) . I have no prior experience with Linux.
2 days ago I did net install of Debian (latest testing distro), and it went well, except one problem, I was not able to get any resolution above 75Hz at resolutions higher than 1024x768.

my monitor is capable of:
HSync: 30-108
VSync: 50-150
Pixel clock at 300 MHz
(and I figured I should be able to get much higher res.)
the video card is ATI 3D Rage Pro 2X integrated 4MB SDRAM, DAC 200MHz, and although Dell's site lists it as capable of only up to 85 Hz at resolutions higher than 800x600, I have successfully tried 1280x960@100Hz 32 bit with MS Win 2003. I guess it must support 1280X960@100Hz 24 bit with Debian too.

I fought with the configurations, and tried couple of douzen versions of the XF86Config-4, some crash the X, others go to 1024x768 @75... I guess I am not using the correct driver or modeline syntaxis to do the trick?!
Here is my last XF86Config-4:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 > /var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum

Comment out the custom modline and remove the @100 in the screen section and see how it goes. Then you can check in the /var/log/XFree86.0.log and see how the monitor is getting detected to see the other modes you should be able to use. X will use the highest available refresh rate that the driver and monitor supports if you cannot figure it out post the log file here, you will most likely have to split it into two posts to get under the limit.

I think it won't work, since it says there is insufficient memory :-(

although, with default config-file it works in 1024x768@85Hz, and now, it starts at 1024x768@75Hz, which really puzzlez me (not to mention that MS WIN 2003 runs @100Hz at higher res.)
may be I should try 16 bit color first?!

what do you think? all suggestions are welcome.

Yes give it a try at 16 bit and I do believe that windows is using an interlaced signal to get that 100 so in other words it is only running at 50hz non-interlaced which is what you are trying to do now. And you are going to want to comment out this section for the generic mouse it is not finding it.

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier "Generic Mouse"
 Driver "mouse"
 Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
 Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
 Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
 Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

thanx a lot,

the log file proved to be a great tool :-) , I am currently running at 1280x960@100Hz 16bit color
i may try interlaced tomorrow, to see if it will improve the readability of some fonts.

the issue may as well be that ATI windows drivers are more efficient, I came upon some topic on the issue, including a petition for better support for ATI for Linux (for newer GPUs of course besides many manifacturers optimize their hardware for the most intensive applications/environment.

10x again, I am still down on the learning curve, so expect more questions soon ;-)
