help with howto for prog defaults

I've been able to find a few things on setting program defaults but still need some help.

I've managed to set my default web broswer to firefox from the default mozilla by changing the /etc/alternatives link to point to firefox. But I couldn't find anything in here to change my default email program from evolution, which is default from install, to thunderbird which is what I want to use.

I found a place in the kde control center to change the default email to thunderbird but it didn't work when I clicked on a mailto link eveolution still came up. I ran across a post that said evolution was a gnome program and to use gnome-default-applications-properties to change the default email. It worked.

Can anyone suggest a FAQ, howto or any other info in a central place that can help you to change program defaults like these, for a wide range of programs. Rather than having to look through forums to find info on just one program, change it and then keep looking for another post for you next program and on and on.

Or if there may be a config tool I'm unaware of that can handle this would be some good info as well.

Thanks

For KDE :"The KDE Control Center"
http://docs.kde.org/development/en/k...omponents.html

Component Chooser
The component chooser allows you to select the default applications you would like to use for various services. Here you can define what Email Client, Embedded Text Editor, Instant Messenger, Terminal Emulator and Web Browser to use. If you prefer to use Xterm, Vim or Mozilla, this is the place to specify those preferences.
File Associations
This is where you configure everything to do with file associations. Here you can select a filetype, and choose what applications you would like to be able to open it with. You can also select which icon you would like to represent each filetype, and whether to show it in an embedded or a separate viewer.
