help to get thumb drive working


I seem to be searching with the wrong words, I need a tutorial to show me how to get a thumb drive working on my Debian system.

The tutorial worked, usb stick powers right up. I can mount, access the info and umount just fine. What I would like to know now is how to power down the usb stick so I can pull it out, with windows the usb stick has to be powered down to safely remove it or you take the chance of losing data.

I dont believe you have to "power it down" like in windows, just unmount and than you can remove it.
