help, lost sound support on upgrade from Sarge to Sid

Hi all,

I just upgraded from Sarge to Sid and seem to have lost all sound support. When I start KDE, I get an error message from arts that says "Error while initializing sound driver, device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)." I had prevously done "adduser <username> audio" to add sound support to Sarge, but that doesn't seem to work now. In fact, I can't even get audio when loggined in as root.

I think that the upgrade may have overwriten which modules get loaded at boot. If I do "lsmod," this is what I get:

Code:

Is a driver necessary for sound support missing? Thanks for any help.

Peace.

What sound card are you using? I don't see a driver for it loaded anywhere.

i have an onboard ac97 soundcard.

londonboi, i did "apt-get install alsa," but the ac97 driver was not selectable as a sound driver. i selected the via82<something>, but that didn't work. any thoughts? thanks for any help.

Have you tried OSS? Saw another thing about
SB emulation mode set in BIOS if possible. What kernel are you on?
