Since the KDE 3.4 upgrade appeared in Etch, it seems to have broken a few apps as far as I can see. It seems to have removed QT-Designer and also K3b as far as I've noticed. I'm no longer able to install K3b from the repositories and it appears to be a broken package.

Also QT-Designer has disappeared.

Anybody else find anything missing/broken in testing/etch?

K3b for some reason,as well as stream-ripper.

Yes, the QT libraries seem to have been affected. I think this is due to the huge KDE upgrade. All the older QT apps will also have to be compiled against the latest versions. I suppose that's why there are quite a few broken ends.

Hopefully will be sorted out, because K3b is my favourite burner app in Linux...

I haven't tried KDE 3.4 with Debian because I use Gnome, but with Mepis when I upgraded to 3.4 it did break k3b and a few other apps.

What I ended up doing, what adding some sid/unstable sources to my mepis etch sytem and was able to reinstall the missing apps.

i went from 3.3.2 -> 3.4.0 from teh alioth repos, and then to .1 again with alioth. Now im using 3.4.2 from etch. Didnt break anything, afaik.

Er... actually QT designer isn't gone or broken. It still exists on my system. Strange though that the executable is now designer-qt3

I vaguely remember it being qt3-designer.

A late comment on the thread... while browsing for some solution to these problems. (now solutions proposed above actually, should I just wait? how long before changing to other distro )

I have had to reinstall my etch system. And during the new install I got KDE 3.4 on. But now it seems like Kaffeine, Amarok, K3b and others cannot be installed anymore.

Another issue (debian specific, or kde specific?) is that my system is a LOT slower running the new kde 3.4. Another difference is that I didn't reinstall the proprietary nvidia driver and run the normal "nv" driver. But I don't think this is the cause of any of the trouble (huh?).

You will continue to see breakages in Testing packages as the library transition continues. This has been mentioned in numerous threads. It will eventually get sorted, but that is what the Testing stage is all about. So I would simply advise that if someone is going to run a stage other than Stable that these types of events should simply be accepted and recognized.

I also noticed that some apps which depend on the package cannot be installed because the package is broken at present...

Sorry to be bragging about that, but (innocent me...) I actually thought this is what unstable was all about. Such that stable/testing mostly showed difference in stability and security updates, not about broken packages.

So I guess now I am warned, grrr... I guess this explains really the testing term!

But then, is there another (good) distro out there, which is maybe more focused on having the cool stuff running (as in testing as compared to stable), but without being so focused on security and stability as debian stable is. In the end, I do only use my computer as a desktop and not as a server. But honestly don't feel like learning a new distro. Wow... I am stuck with Debian, just like others are stuck with XP. I guess my life could then be worse

K3B "came back" today.

If anybody upgraded to the latest CUPS and it's broken, I fixed it this way:

The symptom is that it exits with status 98.

1. If you don't have /etc/cups/classes.conf create one. I copied one over from a mandrake installation. All it containrd was 2 comments:

2. Edit cupsd.conf and comment out the line:

Usually testing isn't so rough. But a major upgrade like KDE always has its little glitches here and there. Especially when the libraries are being updated.
