gui login?
 

I no this has been asked b4 but i cant find the answer now. I am running debian lenny 5 with openbox lxpanel. when I boot it is at the command line the runlevel is 2. How can I get a gui login screen with out adding lots of files from gnome and such?

You need to add KDE, Gnome, WM, Blackbox, etc., or any other window manager to get a GUI.

If you want a small, low-end GUI, try Blackbox.

you could try slim:
or xdm.

I have xdm I have a gui just not a gui login screen

mh, thats weird. try purging and re-installing it (or using slim instead, whatever you prefer).
if that doesnt help post your /etc/inittab, might be someone might tell you if you gotta modify it (i dont know, as when i install a login-manager i allways get a login-screen and vice versa, so i never had that problem)

okay Ill try again I have no problem everything is how I wanted it to be installed I dont want or need a gui system I have one i choose not to install lxsession cause I dont want a whole manager for just the ability to log in. I need to know what file to edit to make the runlevel go straight to gui and/or how to auto start 'startx'.

(i for one would install the 30MB gdm and be done with it, but each to his own. Well, i never had much luck editing inittab...)

You can change to runlevel 3 from runlevel 2 by logging in to runlevel 2 and typing:

su
<password>
init 3

Or, if you are in the sudoers file:

sudo init 3
<password>

And it will change to runlevel 3. I can't figure out why you need a gui login if you're using a terminal. But, as it was said before, to each his own.

I dont need one I'm just trying to learn how to create a system to actually work well on my netbook ... its an asus 900A it only has 4gb ssd and really every Megabyte counts even if I install crunchbang lite it takes up a Gigabyte after tweeking but after my debian install of just the base system its at 350Mb so im just trying to learn to tweak things and save as much space as possible If anyone knows about a tutorial on inittab or afaik whatever that is it would help me greatly or mabey one on creating your own login screen?

a) i just checked the german-ubuntu-wiki for /etc/inittab and there it is said that ubuntu doesnt use it no more but <upstart>
If im correct crunchbang is based on ubuntu? ( i installed linux-mint yesterday and couldnt find no /etc/inittab ...neither)

b) besides the manpages for inittab and runlevel i dont know a better docu/howto

c) afaik : as far as i know.

d) i play around with small distros every now and then. When it comes to spare disk-space i would go
a) for damnsmalllinux or
b)for a stock-debian-installation without environment, add xorg add fluxbox, add xfe and some apps, and thats it.
Most of the other distros wont be that small, as they tend to offer what is called "user-friendlyness" (a control-center,wicd, and that.

e) I got debian-lenny installed on a 4GB pendrive with kde3-minimal, kdm and fluxbox (for speed). The root partition uses 1.2 GB. If you dont use damn-small-linux, puppy or slitaz (vektor-linux ? )you wont get much less space used ( in my humbling opinion).

thanks it is some good stuff though I actually have a fully working system on my netbook with internet opera and vlc with all plugins working at 802MB I might add battle of wenoth and Ill be at 1.1GB but thats when my netbook starts to slow down thats why im trying to save space I no I found something before a tutorial on making your own login screen which actually didnt call for any new programs just xorg but ill keep looking it isnt a big deal now i just thought there might be an easy answer o well thanks everyone. Until I come up with another crazy sceem!
