Grub error 5/17/18

I'had before installed on my hard drive winXP and Linux Salckware.

Than i switch to debian resetting the partition previusly assigned to slack.

Now in boot i recive the error 18 or 17.

I've tried out to change some IDE acces mode from my BIOS, the only thing changed was that i get the error 5 on one of that three.

Thanks,

Siegfried

Does your system boot from the MBR or a /boot partition?? did you install a new bootloader or edit it if it's in /boot if not redoing the partition might have given it a different number in which case it can't find the Debian install to boot to.

The exact error will help

RE: grub errors

With the "auto" access mode I get the error 18.

If I use the Large mode i get the error 5.

Now I whant to try reinstalling my Debian distro and trying to use Lilo instead of Grub.

Will it be useful or what else could I do?

Thanks.

Excuse me I forgot to say that I do not use the /boot partition and I have reinstalled also the MBR, formatting all the partition reserved to linux and chainging all the filesystem (EXT3 for thr /root and SWAP).

Thanks
