Confirm that your PC can boot from another media such as CD, DVD and/or USB media, before you set a password.
For example,
Super Grub2 disk: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/super-grub2-disk/
kexec-loader: http://www.solemnwarning.net/kexec-loader/
PlopKexec: https://www.plop.at/en/plopkexec.html
kiyoshi's help: http://kiyoandkei.blog68.fc2.com/blog-entry-52.html

In case you messed Grub2, to repair bad situation of Grub2:
Rescatux: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/rescatux/
Boot-Repair: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair
