Graphics package
 

Hi All, does anyone have any information about graphics packages in Debian please? I guess I'm looking for something which allows me to look at jpegs from my digital camera and adjust contrast of images etc.

Appreciate any thoughts on what would be good to use,

It seems to me you'll be happy by just using Gnome, or KDE for that matter.
When X is set up and you're logged in with a graphical desktop, double click an image in the file-browser and it should open (at least under Gnome) in eog (Eye Of Gnome), which is an image browser.

If you want to ajust things, install Gimp and you'll find tools for many things. You may want to take a look at the new Gnome application for photographs management (I think it's called "F-spot").

It all depends on how comprehensive you want the graphics package to be! There's Gimp (with features on par with if not better than Paintshop Pro, Photosuite) or there's Gwenview an uncomplicated viewer with limited features.

GIMP is the standard OpenSource photo editor, but there are others which do simple adjustments. Look also at Image Magick. This is an extremely powerful command-line tool. Both should be available using your package manager---GIMP at least might already be installed.

One intriguing thing that I stumbled across is Bibble. It is not free, however.

I run this under gnome on my system .. it's pretty nice.

DigiKam is available in the Debian Repositories.

For image management I particularly like Gthumb. Like all other picture photo managers is allows you to view thumbnails and full size pictures. What I do like about Gthumb is the ability to perform nice series renumbering and the cropping feature which let you retain the aspect ratio of your picture.

It also has e feature to create a ready-to-load web page with thumbnails, half-size and full size images.

The Gimp is the de-facto standard on bitmap editors, but for simple photo manipulation it might not be what you want.
