Graphical Login restarts X Server

I don't even know where to start googling for this. As of this morning, one of my PCs, running Debian 3.1 unstable, KDM, KDE 3.5, fully updated, does this:

Boots to the usual login screen. I enter the password and it is as if I have pressed Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. I'm back at the login window.

If I select console login I can log in, run startx and all is OK.

The only errors in the Xorg.0.log file are

Code:

Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/X11/TTF/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/X11/OTF, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/X11/CID/, removing from list!

but I have the same errors on this PC, which does not have this problem.

What is written at the bottom of /var/log/xdm.log ?

This happened to me today, so I was forced to actually solve it

There is a bug in the xfree86-common package, that renames the /etc/X11/Xsession script to /etc/X11/Xsession.xfree86 when it shouldn't. This causes the problem that we're seeing.

Rename the file back to its proper name and it will fix the problem.

This was reported today as bug #366065.

If you see any other threads about this issue, point them over here, eh?

That was it! Renaming the script to Xsession worked.

The same thing happened today on my main machine as I (stupidly) upgraded X11-common, which I avoided doing yesterday as it also installes XFree96-common.

Interestingly I now cannot uninstall XFree86-Common. It wants to take all of X and KDE with it!

The fix to this bug has been uploaded in version 7.0.17, and should get into the archive later today. Here are the changelog entries:

Hey all,
I have that same problem.Kernel:2.6.17-1.2187_FC5

THE ERROR IS:

/usr/share/X11/fonts/OTF,removing from list
" "CID"
" "/misc/" refcount is 2,should be 1;fixing.

Here's whats in my X11:

applnk prefdm starthere X Xmodmap xorg.conf.backup
fs rstart sysconfig xdm xorg.conf Xresources
mwm serverconfig twm xinit xorg.conf~ xsm

For me the solution was to run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and manually specify my driverset (ATI--it had been set on Vesa).
