Question Got debian installed!! - Need to setup static ip now??

ok.. I have been babied by all the other distro's I have used, (even slackware has a config for setting up ip address)

I need to setup a static ip.. to do the ftp install I went with dhcp, but now this will be my home's file server..

How do I set a static ip address???

thanks

the config file will be in /etc/network/interfaces.

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# This entry was created during the Debian installation
# (network, broadcast and gateway are optional)
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address ...
netmask ...
network ...
broadcast ...
gateway ...

that's basically all that you need. if your running to nic cards make sure that you put each one in there. do a ifdown eth0, configure, ifup eth0 and you should be good to go. you might want to ping, if it's not connected then i would /etc/init.d/network restart.

cheers.

I don't have network in my /etc/network/interfaces, so I suggest leaving network out. Mine looks like this:

# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address
netmask
broadcast
gateway

I use Mepis/Debian, so it should be about the same for you.
