gnome terminal flicker problem

Whenever I backspace in any of the terminals in gnome (x-term, xfterm4, gnome-terminal, wterm, etc.), if there are no more characters to erase, my entire screen blacks out for a short time (half a second maybe) every time I press the backspace key. Not just the terminal, the whole screen goes out. To reproduce this weirdness, I just have to open a console and hit the backspace key.

This does not happen in kde or xfce. I'm using the latest unstable sources.

Anybody having the same issue?
