Gnome sounds not working

Hi there everyone,

I am new to linux but it is a debian (lenny) question I hope its in the right section. After being a slave to windows I decided to try linux again ubuntu and thouyght it was really nice so then I fudged the install and thought I would see what was debian like, I really like the dist, had the black screen issue at first but installed the nivida drivers after a few hours searching.

so I have got a pretty sweet setup going on with this lenny but while I spent 3hrs getting sound to work for ET now gnome sounds dont work they never did, in the sound options I can hear also and oso test sounds but when I try ESD I get

"audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not establish connection to sound server"

I followed a few guides from what I can gather and installed some libs but really needs some expert advice here

if anyone can help me out would me appreciated thanks

forgot to say what OS I am on

Debian (lenny)

update

I installed the ESD library libesd0 and libesdalso ahd to be removed I now got sound in gnome got sound on you tube but in the sound prefs I get ESD sound test ok OSS says

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open audio device for playback. Device is being used by another application.

Alsa test sounds ok lost sound in enemy territory again lol

thanks for the reply

I followed the guide and for a sec I got oss working gaian but esd could not connect to server error,

so I rebooted and tried to search as much as I could before posting here but now I stumped I get this message from OSS in sound pref

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open audio device for playback.

and I dunno which lib I should have as only 1 can be installed libesd-alsa0 or libesd0, with libesd0 only alsa works esd doesnt same message with oss or with libesd-alsa0 esd works and and alsa works but oss same message

update

ok just read some more and tried it and sort of got it working but then esd stops working so it seems I dont have some oss modules loaded

so on the post it said to look for snd_seq_oss" "snd_mixer_oss" "snd_pcm_oss, they are missing so I added them now I can see the oss mixer in sound prefs but its in use by another person so I use the ps -ef and kill

andrew 3912 1 0 17:40 ? 00:00:00 esd -nobeeps

and

andrew 3904 1 0 17:39 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/gnome-applets/mixer_app

and

andrew 3579 1 0 17:31 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/gnome-volume-manager/gn

no sound is esd but sound in oss and alsa, is there not a way I can have sound on my desktop and souns in my games?
