it is quite old: https://packages.debian.org/sid/gnome-commander
you might want to compile it from source: https://gcmd.github.io/

but actually you need to check the changelog to find the reason

thanks, there are some details here:
https://gcmd.github.io/2019/05/30/gcmd-ubuntu-deb.html

I have some old version on LXDE; thought it was popular enough.

If you like that two panel file manager, the venerable "mc", Midnight Commander lives on. Spend some time in the hot keys and you'll find it's tremendously capable and effective.

MC is great, I also use it on Raspberri Pi 3+.

On Debian I use MC but also XFE

In the centre of the menu buttons on top you see one with a red/white exclamation mark, you can easily switch to root mode.
General: It has a lot of handy R-mouse options.
