getting Xwindows working in new Sarge install

Hi there,
I recently installed sarge (my first ever LINUX-anything) on a new box.
What i want to ask about here is getting Xwindows working .. mostly.

At boot up i get@:
XFree 86 version 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0.fsg. 1-12.0.1 20050223080930
joshk@something.org)
Release Date 15 August 2003
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.9 1686 [ELF]
followed by:
I will disable this Xserver for now.
Restart GDM when it is configured correctly.

ok...basically my thoughts are this: there is an empty AGP slot on my box here - does Xwindows need a graphics card..probably does.
Do you think that this is the source of my xWin problem here?

As a kinda sidenote, some of the boot text (?) that is still visible when the boot process gets to login reads:
Starting OpenBSD Secure Shell Server: sshd

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't ?BSD a collection of 'other' open source OS's? How come its here on my debian sarge boot text?

thanks in advance!
Howard

ps - pls also note that i am currently working on being able to update my kernel so that might also be the cause of the prob.

Answer = No. (ie. I doubt it)

Try running (as root):
#apt-get install gdm xdebconfigurator
and then run
#xdebconfigurator

Good luck

ps. Open source OSes tend to share/resuse code in some areas so a mention of a BSD isn't unusual. Perhaps you could google for an answer for that question.

oh yeah!

Of course...now you put it like that, its makes perfect sense!! Why shouldn't it be there. Thanks for that uberNUT69, I'll have a go at the xdebconfigurator.

hi there

I tried Xdebconfigurator and got the following (the ? represent characters that are currently off screen, because i haven't figured out the horizontal screen configuration yet)

?eading Package Lists ... Done
?dm is already newest version
:couldn't find package xdebdonfigurator

ok the last, line there...do you happen to know on which iso the xdebconf is? This pc is stranded from the web and I'm posting from another. I've got the first two installation iso's, and told the installation setup to install server type software, and tasksel to install the Xwindows.

I still haven't been able to update the kernel either - where does that come from? I which installation media?

thanks in advance for any replies-
howard

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

will allow you to reconfigure XF86Config. Make sure you have your monitor specs handy. Horizontal and Vertical refresh rates.
