I use DigiKam (KDE) which should be in apt's cache, I also added this to my /etc/fstab
Code:
usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0
Found a url that might help also. Here

I know that i had the same problem, and even if i don't like to use workaround, it was the only way for me to make it works...
Did you tried in root??
Here is what i do now: - get a shell
- type "su" (and fill your password)
- type "lsusb" just to see if your camera is recognized
- type "gtkam" (if the cam is recognized, it should work...)
If it doesn't work, post the output...
I know that now i'm in the "camera" group ( adduser <your_login> camera), but the only thing that changed is that now i can see if my camera is recognized even if i'm not logged as root... but gtkam still doesn't work...

Type in a terminal with root permissions ' fdisk -l '. See if it shows any items as /dev/sda*.
