General Questions From A Desperate Newbie!

Hello Linux Users!

I recently switched to Debian from Mac OSX and I'm having a bit of trouble with a few things.

I have read tutorials, FAQ's, mailing list archives, and searched Google up and down and as a result there are a few select questions left un-answered.

I am a newbie to Linux but that doesn't mean I have not tried to learn how to solve these problems without help.

They are as follows:

1) Flash Player Plugin support for Firefox, swf-player does not work.

2) Do I really have to login to root everytime I want to install an application, make a new directory, or change any settings? How could I do it from a normal user account? I have tried su -s username (and without -s)

3) I have a my Macintosh HD as a seperate IDE hard drive in the same computer as Debian and I would like to acess my music files. Is there a way to use an Mp3 player in Debian and have it play files from an HFS+ formatted drive? (I don't have enough room to copy files to linux HD)

3.1) I have an 80gb Maxtor IDE HD w/Mac OSX installed.
3.2) I have a 6gb Maxtor IDE HD w/Linux Debian installed.

4) I am getting errors while trying to install Mac-On-Linux, I solved most of them and what it boiled down to is I need to install the OSX driver which is non-free. apt-cache does not list it and I do not understand in what way I edit the sources.list file (what do I add?).

Please excuse my arrogance; I did try to solve each one of these myself and I have taken the time to understand how to use Linux but I have only had it installed for 3 days.

Thanks very, very, much in advance!

Not sure what was installed with Debian but you can try 'sudo command' If sudo isn't installed, 'apt-get install sudo'. You might have to add permissions to /etc/sudoers. So open it up and add 'yourusername ALL=(ALL) ALL' to the end.

try 'mount hfs /dev/machdd /mountpoint'
Not sure if that works, I just checked "man mount"

The stuff in it italics should be replaced by the correct values. I'm a newbie too so I can't answer your other questions.

Hello and Welcome to LQ!

try just su (it will ask for password) also research sudo, and yes, it is necesary, it makes things so much more secure, and linux better.

yes, there is a way to read mac formated hdd drives.
http://www-sccm.stanford.edu/Students/hargrove/HFS/ (yes it's built into the kernel now, but this site has some info)

did you mean arrogance (stuck up) or ignorance (not knowing?)

Wow! Fast respone!

First off, thanks to juvestar15 and titanium_geek for taking the time to respond.

I solved the second problem by doing the following:
Code:
adduser epimetheus sudo
As for HFS+ viewing... it will take some tinkering but that site you linked is now a bookmark and I will be reading it throughout the next hour or so and trying a few things out.

As for arrogance; sorry I'm a bit arrogant when it comes to vocabulary and grammer. I thought I understood the word via false contextual definition and never actually defined it for myself! (Touche)

Thanks again for the help guys! Hopefully questions 1 and 4 will be answered soon and I will be on my way to being a Linux Guru!

for flash plugins, I use the flashplugin-nonfree package.

follow the instructions at

ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/index.html

mind you they are i386 and sparc packages only, so probably not much use to you.

you could just download the source and install it by hand.
