general aptitude

When I first used dselect I was very scared and have heard similier stories from other people, but now I find it supremely easy, it's especially quick to just search a package to satisfy compile dependancies.

But aptitude, what the hell is that all about, I just never can figure out where I am with it or even a guaranteed way to actually install packages.

I recently made the mistake of using tasksel to give me an graphical desktop. oooops! I really hate KDE ( probably more than wiingdowls ) and am even disliking Gnome now too, there is just too much crap;

thanks Agnula DeMuDi for letting me see light of the fluxbox....

I compiled Xfree 4.4 over it anyway and am using the lovely XDM to login.

1) How can I set desktop background for a) xdm, b) fluxbox.
2) since recomping kernel usb spits out blacklisted msgs
3) WHY THE HELL CAN'T THEY (X PEOPLE) SAY WHAT PACKAGES ARE NEEDED TO COMPILE X .

Not that I partically am bothered about answers to above questions.

bool EndRant = true;

My advice:

Do the following.....
1. Get rid of ALL KDE and Gnome packages
2. apt-get install x-window-system
3. apt-get install xserver-xfree86
4. apt-get install xdm
5. apt-get install xfce4

Done!
