gedit iceweasel window not responding

I am using Debian Etch from a web install and I get a lot of messages saying "window xxxxxxxx not responding..."

It seems the windows are only slow to respond because the message rarely needs acting upon as the windows slowly close after the display of the message although sometimes, it is 20 to 30 seconds later.

This is using "gedit" and "iceweasel" and it seems to slow down my machine considerably.

I usually work with about 6 windows opened at the same time, but reducing this number does not seem to make much difference. I also have 1G of memory.

Most of this work is HTML but I check the files with the W3C validator before using them.

What can I do to solve the problem?

Thank you for your help.

What does this mean? Is Debian installed on your hard drive?

Do things work normally if you just use one program at a time---eg word processor, e-mail client, etc.?

Thank you for your answer.

I should have said "installed from the web", yes it is on my hard disk.

Testing one HTML document with every other window closed gives the same result.

I have made a few test following your questions and I have found that I get the same result with an HTML document containing 2 words. However if I remove the CSS link (from this document - to an external CSS file) to a small animated .gif image, or disable it in some way, then the problem disappears.

It is definitely something on this machine because the same HTML files, including the CSS file are uploaded on a testing site on the Internet and they behave as expected from this site, rendering any change immediately, including the animated .gif image, but this site is tested from another machine.

This machine uses Debian Etch while the other machine uses Debian Sarge. The CSS file has also been checked with the W3C css validator and is valid.
