gdm3 fails to start if usb keyboard or usb mouse are moved to different ports

I tore down my Debian install yesterday and moved it to a new location in the house when I reconnected the mouse and keyboard I connected them into different ports. I then booted the system and it froze when loading Gnome. When I moved the usb devices back to their original locations and it booted without trouble. What could possible cause this problem, shouldn't the ports be automagically found?

Try booting into Recovery Mode; log in as root and then check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log That will probably give you an indication of what the problem is.
