Gdm trouble!

I've had Debian woody installed for about a month now, and i said "what if X backfires". I was thinking that if i ever have trouble with X, how would i fix it. I need to start x with startx(hehe). How would i disable gdm. I would imagine gdm.conf or something of the sort.what command would i use to start xterm or blackbox, or even gnome from the console, while not in gui, for example, to start kde is startkde. Help soon>

If X doesn't work, no GUI apps will start.

To boot directly into a command prompt

As root, edit the file /etc/inittab

Change the line

id:5:initdefault:

to

id:3:initdefault:

If gdm fails to start three times in a row, Debian will ask if you want to disable it for now or not. Then you can fix it from the console. darthtux's advice is wrong because Debian doesn't manage your runlevels for you (and no distro should, IMO), it lets you manage them how you want. Runlevels 2-5 are the same in Debian.
