gcc does not run nor g++

I started with a base install of Debian and ahve been slowly building it up as I need. I have xfce as my desktop environment and don't even have gnome or kde installed. I have not put sound in yet, so my system is pretty bare.

Ok now the problem. I have gotten around to installing NVdia drivers chipset and video. So I need gcc and libc and some other stuff. So I got it all. I got the gcc through apt-get as everything else.

apt-get install gcc-4.0

it installed fine, but when I go to use it no dice. It just tells me taht gcc does not exist.

When I install NVidia drivers it say gcc version can not be determined and quits.

That is some newbie coming through right there. I apologize for the question. I was under the impression that when I installed gcc-4.0 all things needed where also installed. I was mistaken and should have looked better at the new package list.

On the other hand, I do appreciate the help I am sure it would have taken me a few days to figure that out.
