gaim only connecting when Kopete is already connected

So I've got gaim installed, and I prefer using gaim, otherwise I'd just uninstall it. The problem is, is that it won't connect(it just sits there, acting like it's getting ready to...but never does). I have to cancel the connection, start and connect kopete, then gaim will connect.

I've tried dpkg-reconfigure gaim, as well as purging it, and reinstalling, but to no avail. Suggestions?
