fstab: should be child's play

Windows partition won't mount automatically at boot.. It's accessible only to root., despite "user" option in fstab.

gparted lists NTFS partition as
Quote:
/dev/hda1
Output of parted:
Code:
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
 1 32.3kB 40.0GB 40.0GB primary ntfs boot
Pertinent line in fstab:
Quote:
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
/dev/hda1 /media/windows ntfs auto,user,noexec,rw,sync 0 0
What am I missing? Thanks in advance for any help available.

Unless you are using the ntfs-3g driver, your ntfs partition should be configured read only, not rw.

Was this partition present when you installed debian lenny? In my case, lenny automatically set up my ntfs partition with the ntfs-3g driver. Here's what the entry looks like:

/dev/hde1 /mnt/win_c ntfs-3g defaults 0 0

IIRC with ntfs-3g the user must also be in the group fuse.

*solved* fstab: should be child's play

Thanks, everyone. umask=022 (picked up at Debian Forums) was the solution. Also changed to ro.
