First time Debian install

Hi there,

I am an old Linux user, starting in 1992 but have been using W$2k or NT for 7 years. I'm rusty with Linux. I've used slackware, Redhat, and Lindows. I tried installing Debian once but it was not intuitive and further couldn't find documentation. Am now using Win2000 Pro, but want to switch to multiboot Debian/Win2000, each on its own hard disk.

Question: Where can I find good documentation on the initial Debian install?

Question: Where do I find documentation on package installation? Isn't there a package management tool?

Question: Where do I find information on the bootloader and how to set up a multiboot system using Debian and Win2000?

Thanks in advance. -rs

This link, Installation Walkthrough should get you started on the right path! If you use Debian's bootloader, it should setup a dual boot system for you. Be sure to install the bootloader on the MBR.

Hi!
Are you installing from CD? Then you shold take a look at /doc or /install/doc directories.
I got a nice document about debian 3.0 installation. You can find it in

The documentation on the 1st CD is pretty comprehensive. You'll be amased at how far Linux has come since you last used it.

Debian uses apt for packages (if available) else you would download tar balls and go through the normal process. There is a specific section dealing with apt in chapter 8 of the debian manual which can be found at Debian.org

I would personally recommend using grub for multidisk. apt-get install grub then update-grub and then go and look in /boot/grub. Look at device.map to find out what partitions have been identified and then edit menu.lst accordingly. There are good examples of how each system is setup in menu.lst
