maybe you could try to familiarize yourself with the command line interface, the bash shell, and apt-get/dselect first. As an exercize you could try to install a package like 'music123'. It's a command line mp3/ogg player and the process will let you see how you can add software to your system using apt-get and dselect.

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages can be really helpful for finding packages that you may want to install.
