Firefox themes and extensions on Linux - how to deal with them?
It still is a pain to see themes and extensions not being installed in Firefox, because they seem te require root priviliges which I will never give them. How do you cope with that?
(Only a handful offer an install into the user profile) also on http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=118128 |
Use Firefox 0.9 - as long as it is run once as root*, it will install all of your themes and extensions into your user profile without hassle.
* - Fx creates a few files in its installation directory to improve performance when dealing with extensions and themes; as long as these files are created it will work fine (hopefully). |
well...I've never encountered this, have I just used the "nice" extensions and/or themes? I mean, if I go to the webpage and click on some, it asks me if I want to install it, and does so no matter what user I am (not root anyway)...

I'll try 0.9 again |
I updated to 0.9 on sarge, ran it once as root and it works normally now in the user accounts :) Thanks guys!

About Firefox themes
I just downloaded a .jar theme for Firefox. How can I install it? On the web page I downloaded it from says that I should drag&drop the .jar in the Firefox themes window, but this is probably only for Windows, since I can't drop it there in Linux. And, one more thing. How can I make a shortcut to Firefox in the start menu? And where should I add the Firefox dir so that it will execute when I type firefox in the Run command box?
Obviously, I'm very new to Linux, so every help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
all I did was save the jar file to my home directory then pointed firefox to my home directory. Then I cleared the address bar and put this in it: javascript:void(InstallTrigger.installChrome(InstallTrigger.SKIN,'/path_to/your_home/Noia2_Full.jar','Noia 2.0 (eXtreme)'))
Of course correct to your path for your home directory and correct for the theme you are trying to install. |
