and... is there no way to install firefox from repos?

It's called "iceweasel" in debian due to branding issues.

I'm betting he already knew that and was actually asking "is there a way to install _firefox_ from repos?". please don't patronize the newbies, it makes OSS look bad.

anyhoo, is there a way to install _firefox_ (not iceweasel) from repos? inquiring minds want to know...

ps: i must say craig's apt-get quote is frightening.

Bezierk: There is no way to get firefox in Debian from the repos. The firefox in the repos is a dummy package which installs iceweasel. but everything that works for firefox will work for iceweasel. (take account of the version though, for addon purposes)

Just remember, the version number is different for squeeze and sid. you would download 3.5 instead of 3.0.5.

i already have firefox installed. had to do it after iceweasel messed up a couple sites i visit often. besides i don't like the reasons why there's no firefox for debian. but that's just me...

the question comes from the notion that someone, somewhere, maybe, might have compiled a deb file and set up a repo for it and how this would be great in order to keep firefox updated. I've thought about looking for some kind of firefox svn but didn't actually looked for it because it would have to include to learn more about svn and I have no time for it right now.

Why bother? It's very easy to just download FF from the Mozilla site and install it manually on your Debian system. You'll get the newest version of FF that way also. IceWeasel is usually quite a ways behind the current release FF from Mozilla. Here's a quickie way to do it:

1) Download FF from Mozilla
2) Extract (GUI or CLI, whatever's easiest for you) the package to /usr/local/bin
3) Create a symlink to /usr/local/bin/firefox/firefox in /usr/bin
4) Create a menu entry and/or panel icon for your newly installed FF

That's it. Takes all of about 5 minutes, download time included. If you need actual command line commands, let me know... I'll post them for you.

P.S. You can do the same with Thunderbird, too.

My sentiments exactly. What's more, the autoupdating can be activated and once installed FFx and TB will update themselves automatically. It's really cool

The OP said he was new to debian so how would he know that? It may be true that he did know it (maybe he'll tell us...) but a reasonable conclusion would be that he didn't. Your handle notwithstanding maybe you want to lighten up a bit, eh?

Just thought i would point out that downloading the FF package will get you the x86 version.
Although there is a test x64 version in the nightly builds section.
Can't comment on how well it works as i use Iceweasel:

Of course you can run the x86 version on a x64 o/s if you choose.
Personally i find Iceweasel works just fine for me.

I will stick with iceweasel> Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090707 Firefox/3.5 (Debian-3.5-1), Debian has patches and security fixes that Firefox does not have, personally I will stick with apps in the Debian repos.

In stable even when iceweasel shows an older version keep in mind the security updates for it are actually part of
xulrunner-1.9 (1.9.0.11-0lenny1) so atm stable has iceweasel 3.0.11 not that far behind Mozilla.

Other than 3.5 being a tad lighter on ram usage it isn't any different than 3.0.11.

swiftfox has 64bit builds.

For someone that is new to linux doing:
is no simple thing, also you can extract it to anywhere as long you symlink the plugins, you can also run both iceweasel and firefox just create a new profile for firefox, start it with firefox -profilemanager

To each their own, my friend. That's the great thing about GNU/Linux... there are MANY ways to do things. You seem to be sticking to the "Debian Way" with your use of IceWeasel on your system. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. And yes, I know that for a new Linux adventurer my steps above would not have seemed very simple. That's why I offered to post the individual commands for the person who started this thread. I noticed last night that we are replying to a thread that is quite old. That's OK, though. Maybe it'll help others searching for answers.

yes iceweasel in stable says 3.0.6 but xulrunner1.9 is
1.9.0.11-0lenny1 which is where the security updates for iceweasel come in.Making it effectively iceweasel 3.0.11

I personally use Swiftfox. It's an optimized version of the most current mozilla-Firefox. They have their own repos and supply debs as well. The Swiftfox page is at getswiftfox.com
