Firefox and thunderbird update

I'm trying to update firefox and thunderbird to the latest versions. apt-get only updates to version 1.0.xx. Downloading from the website gives me a .tar.gz file which I'm unsure what to do with. I've unzipped them but there's no configure file. Any help would be much appreciated.

Firefox install

Try this for firefox:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installing_Firefox
Linux install is near the bottom. A search for Thunderbird returns the same page so I think they'er doen at the same time. I'm not a user of these apps and by any means a Debian guru but this should be a good start.

If you are not using sarge (are you?) you can upgrade all the way up to 2.0b2

Use Backports.org to get new packages in Debian stable..

You WILL need to use apt pinning to select ONLY the packages you want to install..

This HOW-To should cover everything
