firefox and conflicting plugins??

Hello !

I have installed the mplayer plugin and when installing realplayer 10, it does install some plugins for firefox as well.

However, it looks like I am having trouble playing audio/video *.ram files. I have been removing/installing them one by one but when they are installed together, it is not always behaving ok...

One thing that I have noticed is that eventhough I can see the list of plugins via 'aboutlugins', they do not appear in Edit > preferences > downloads . plugins.

When I tried MEPIS, I remember that all these plugins were installed without conflicts and that they were listed both in aboutlugins and in the preferences menu. So this means that the installation process that we followed is probably a little bit more than just placing files in the firefox/plugins directory.

it would be really helpful for people starting with debian if there were some clarifications about how to install these plugins properly and completely. Also it would probably avoid many queries regarding plugins in the future.

Thanks in advance for any bit of info that you could provide or point to regarding these differences in installation and possible conflicts when plugins are not installed properly.

Open the mplayer config file. Edit it and make sure anything related to RealPlayer is commented out.

All I had to do to install any plugins was use Synaptic.

The plugin list in Edit > preferences > downloads . plugins, tends to only show up after you do about:plugins.

Plugins (7)

* Helix DNA Plugin: RealPlayer G2 Plug-In Compatible
* Java(TM) Plug-in 1.5.0_04-b05
* QuickTime Plug-in 6.0, Windows Media Player Plugin are supported by mplayerplug-in
* DjVuLibre-3.5.14
* Shockwave Flash
* VLC multimedia plugin
* Adobe Reader 7.0
