Smile filetransfer over home network

Hello I run Deb 6 and do some astronomy stuff using windows.

I recently installed deb 6 on a machine and it works fine.

I would like to be able to see the Deb 6 hard drive (or a shared folder might be better) from my windows laptop, so that I can transfer files from the windows machine to the deb 6 folder.

Please can anyone advise how I go about a) sharing a folder and making it accessible on the network and b) how I access it from my WIndows 7 m/c?

The machines are wifi connected to a home router.

Thanks very much for your help with this

Paul

You can do it the Windows way (needlessly complex & prone to misconfiguration & breakage) by setting up samba server on your Debian box and sharing a folder.

Or you could do it another way by installing ssh server on Debian (if it's not already) and using something like winscp or filezilla to do file transfers from the win box.

A shared folder would be better and learning how to use Samba is always good.

Check out Samba by Example. It proceeds from simple to complex scenarios. When I wanted to learn how to use Samba for my home network, I found the information I needed by page 20.

I have been recycling and adopting the smb.conf file I created then for about five years.
