fglrx 1:8-5-1, atieventsd and lenny
 

I updated my fglrx the other day, and for the first time that I noticed I also got fglrx-atieventsd, which I've never seen before. I should also say that sometimes my screen freezes up, and that I've got a Dell laptop. I cannot find atieventsd running anywhere. I know mostly nothing about runlevels, but if I look in the directories under '/etc/rc*' I see a couple of 'K20fglrx-driver' and 'S20fglrx-driver' but no 'fglrx-atieventsd' or 'atieventsd' alone. I googled a little and found some people have trouble with atieventsd -- it's responsible for 100% kernel use for no reason for some people, but I want to know if I need it anyway. Thanks in advance for any help. :)

The bug is fixed and the daemon is necessary.

Almost all of the ati graphics cards can use the open source drivers: radeon, ati etc
If you can, remove fglrx and adjust settings. It has plenty of bugs. You can check with the official release notes.

I guess then what I need are instructions on adding the daemon to the proper runlevel. Anyone done this with atieventsd before?

So now I'm looking in /etc/init.d/fglrx-driver and I'm looking at the script. It says the DAEMONNAME, the name of the daemon that the thing starts, is 'atieventsd'. How can I find out that this daemon is running? I typed 'ps -e' at the command line. I typed 'dmesg | grep ati' and 'dmesg | grep fglrx' but the output says nothing about atieventsd. I checked amdcccle. No mention there. Is there a way to see that this is running?

I think you must use debconf or some other system configuration utility for configuring 'services' in Debian.
