I use gnome on my Celeron 500MH & 128 MB Ram, and have no problems. It loads fast, and it doesnt really slow down (except for when I want to use Amarok). For my other 'puter, Pentium I, 32 MB Ram, I use IceWM. It works great...

I like KDE best but gnome is sweet as well, especially in 2.10.

Also, Gnome was a lot responsible for me sticking with Linux way back in 98 when I first tried it. So I'll always have Gnome installed. It looked so good compared to what was avalaible then, including Windows.

And there are plenty of great apps for Gnome.

I like fluxbox. It's light and my system doesn't take two days to perform a dist-upgrade over dial up like it used to with KDE and Gnome. I am now rid of everything KDE and Gnome, and will not install anything that depends on those libs.

The key bindings rock. I can start any app with the push of a button. Forget about icons. I don't use the slit either, like I said the key bindings is all I need. No need to take up valuable desktop space when I don't have to.

I'm a new fluxbox convert because of this thread. Been using it for a few weeks now and it works pretty freaking well for me. I haven't had time to sit down and seriously configure it to my liking (like adding a virtual window panel for each drag/drop apps) but it's working out well. I haven't been able to figure out how to prevent maximized windows from not covering the bottom of the screen though, that's my only gripe so far.

R00ts I haven't figured that out myself either. I once had it working after I used XFCE4 in which I set it. What you could do is not run maximised windows and then rightclick the bar on top and then in the remember menu you can click, position, size and save on exit. That'll automatically start it right.

That's why i don't use Fluxbox, once you have an open screen, there is no way to get the Debian menu, unless you minimize the window.

In Blackbox, all you have to do is click on any edge of the screen, and the Debian menu will pop out. But there is no Alt-Tab, just the hideous bbkeys.

Lately, i've been playing with Openbox with fbpanel as my secondary wm. The fbpanel has an icon that brings up the Debian menu (second from left), and Ob has alt-tab by default.

I'm using FB 0.9.12, when I maximize a window it doesn't cover the toolbar. What do you mean by "the bottom of the screen", and "Debian menu"? Do you mean the Fluxbox toolbar? If so you can set it to always be on top.

This got nothing to do with the toolbar. Please re-read my post.

Well I've set my windows to a size so that there's some space next to the toolbar left (toolbar centered and 50%) so I can get to the menu without minimalizing.

I thought you could set the fluxbox toolbar to always be on top, but I never figured out how. I'll try playing with it when I get home tonight. In regards to no Alt+Tab (which I found annoying as well), I thought you could configure Fluxbox however you like by modifying a config file somewhere and create a custom action for each key press combo or something. Well I'm finished for the semester now so I should have much more time to play around.

IceWM

In my opinion, IceWM is the best. It is very fast and cool. If used with the ROX filemanager, it is just great. To customize it, use IcePref2, a python customizer.

Ok I take it back, I easily figured out how to get it so that the toolbar isn't covered before I made this post. That's easy. But all it does it sets the toolbar to be on the top layer, so when you maximize a window the bottom portion of the window is hidden, which greatly annoys me. I can't see the URLs of links before I click them in Firefox! I suppose I could do an "auto-hide + always on top" for the toolbar, but I've never been a fan of using auto-hide on anything. It seems I'm SOL here.

Fluxbox here. I've been using it for a couple of years, primarily because Fluxmenu is the easiest menu configuration of any WM. Fluxmenu is in the Fluxconf group, apt-get install fluxconf.

Other than that, Fluxbox is simple and fast. BTW, eye candy doesn't impress me so I don't miss it.
