Failures in apt-get?
 

I have been trying to apt-get updates, after it finishes it say the following errors, and suggests i do apt-get update to correct it, however it just comes up with the same errors over ond over, no matter how many times i apt-get update.

after i did the orginal apt-get update, i tried to do a apt-get install guarddog, it updated my entire system, and after about a 450mb download, there was still no guarddog.

The apt-get guarddog keeps saying that it will install about 45 megs of files, and never does, no matter how many times i do this guarddog is never installed.

Well, for the entries that are failing (the ones blurbing 404 Not Found), make sure they are correct and up to date, it happens that some third party repositories move things to other places occasionally. Basically, go to their websites and check what the apt repository entries are supposed to look like.

k i will ignore the silly answer, and try to deal with the hint about the 404 blurb, how do I send apt-get to the correct place if and when i find the correct site?, and how would I know what a correct repository is supposed to look like?

Where did you get those apt repository entries (they are listed in /etc/apt/sources.list if you have forgotten) in the first place? And if you copied them from some random place, a good way to start looking them up is to
- Attempt to visit a website at the host the apt repository is on
- Perform some search with some prominent web search service to locate the website
- When you find the site, find there what the apt repository entries are supposed to look like
- Repeat ad nauseam

the apt output here says something about missing directories, you could start there.
You apparently have a dependency problem - sorry about my silly answer but it didn't seem that surprising with such a sources.list
And it's true: you must check the entries at their website.

the repository sites must have come from the default new release dvd December 2005 installation of knoppix 4.0 running debian 2.6.12, everything on this sys is from the dvd. except for the nvidia driver i installed.

the only thing i am trying to install at the moment is a firewall called guarddog, i was told to do apt-get update, then do apt-get install guarddog, I have done nothing else, but i do want to get the firewall working.

i did search the web and discovered that ndiswrapper is a windows translation thing, i dont need it, and the kanotix is a german site that was all greek to me, not sure if i need it, can i just rem the references to these repositories in my /etc/apt/sources.list? if so then i still need to know why doing apt-get install guarddog does not install guarddog


by the way, i fiddled briefly with several linux versions over the years, never really doing much, just recently i decided to actually do something with it, and so i still have a lot to learn.

I chose this dvd type, because i am on a satelite modem, and am restricted to a maximum download of 350mb in a four hour period, after which (if i exceed the threshold) i am restricted to surfing only for 24 hours, downloading 2 to 3 gig of files would take a couple of weeks.


it is my intent to explore the default software installed by the dvd, and remove the stuff i do not need, i chose to do this cause it was eaisier to remove it after trying it, than it is to search for software that i can not identify, or properly name in the first place.

There is a command called apt-setup that will give you a standard debian sources.list, from the nearest mirror or the one that matches your locale.
You could back up this one and try it.
Anyway I would rem(ove) everything except the stable and testing entries and see what happens, maybe the deps would resolve.

k i think i solved the errors by rem ing the entries in my sources list, but i will try the apt-setup as u suggested, thank you much :)
