Exim or Postfix

Hi,

I need a MTA and pop3 server with virtual domain and mailbox.

I have tried exim but it seems quite hard to configure. LAter Ive installed postfix and courier-pop and created mailboxes manually. But I could not solve auth problem. Actually I did not understand how to add passwords for new users of virtual mailboxes.

Is there a better way to add virtual domains then creating folders manually ?

I don't need mysql support becouse I will use server for few domains.
What do you suggest for a MTA and pop3 server ?

Is pop3 server just an interface for MTA ? I mean configuring MTA for virtual domains and mailbuxes sufficient for solution ?

Sorry for multiple qustions. I an quite confused and really need advices for simplest way to accomplish this.

Regards.

MTA and pop3

Hi,

- the MTA (Mail Transfert Agent, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail_transfer_agent) is in charge of delivering emails fo/from/inside your server. Well known MTAs under linux are postfix, sendmail, exim.
- POP3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POP3) is a protocol used to access to mailboxes. The POP3 Server gives the possibility to your users to connect to your server with a POP3-Compatible software. Use "apt-cache search pop3 | grep server" to see available pop3 servers in your debian distrib.

I think teapop can handle virtual mailboxes. I have no Idea if it is good or not

cheers,

tibob

I use Postfix + courier-imap + courier-pop successfully.

What I do is that I have a virtual mapping table, and I add all virtual domains there. For each mailbox I create a username(e.g.user.domain.com), and I create a line telling the Postfix to redirect any mails for user@domain.com to the mailbox of user.domain.com.

Users can login and check their e-mails using their username (e.g.test.domain.com).

This process can be automated through a bash/PHP/perl script. Personally, I use Webmin to do this.

If you are lost, please ask and I will help you further and I might actually do it for you if I have time.

Postfix.

Most flexible MTA around. excellent smtp handling and restriction functions, support for ssl, cyrus, ldap and whatever you need.
with its content filter you can do anithing you want.
but you need some addon pop/imap/http server part for user access.

check out this doc, besides postfix.org homepage.
http://workaround.org/articles/ispmail-sarge/
should be exact answer.

i followed this doc and did it, without any previous understanding about mysql
on debian box.
only sqwebmail is quit simple, you may wish more userside http functions.

if it will be your first postfix, reading whole postfix description and main.conf parameters is must. better you know it, more you love it.
