Ethernet cards gone after dist-upgrade

Did a base install of Sarge using the Installer Beta 3 netinst, upgraded it to Sid over ftp - everything fine so far, but after the next reboot my connection was gone. I re-ran pppoeconf and this time it did not find any network cards.

Suggestions ?
