E: This installation run will require temporarily removing the essential package e2fsprogs due to a Conflicts/Pre-Depends loop. This is often bad, but if you really want to do it, activate the APT::Force-LoopBreak option.

I just dealt with that problem 2 days ago, and, ummm, kind of solved it by dumb luck.
My situation is that I installed sarge about 8 months back when it was still testing and haven't really done much in the meantime. What I *think* I did to fix this was switched my /etc/apt/sources.list to stable (well, I know I did that) and then, in aptitude, just re-installed e2fsprogs- I'm still a little shaky with aptitude so I can't say for sure that all I did was re-install it. THere was a lot going on with colors and toggling and it was perhaps too much stimulation for me.
Anyway, I guess that's the same thing as if you just apt-get reinstall, so perhaps I'm adding nothing to this thread.
I think I fixed it last night by going back to stable running 'apt-get update' then 'apt-get install e2fsprogs', it updated e2fsprogs and an e2fsprogs lib which was a welcome sign and what the problem appeared to be.
I then changed back to testing and ran 'apt-get update' again and haven't had any problems, well any related to e2fsprogs anyway.
Hopefully this thread will help someone else having the same problem.
