Enlightenment and ATI Driver questions

I just installed Debian, because I keep trying other distros in an attempt to find the one I like best. One of the things that is most important to me is that I can get 3D acceleration with my Radeon 9800 Pro working. If I can't, I may as well stick with Windows.

Of all the Distros I have installed, only Ubuntu has had a nice, working forum thread that actually gave solid instructions on setting up an ATI driver to work properly. I have not been able to successfully get the ATI drivers working (Always uses the damn Mesa ones) in any other Distro. So I'm trying debian now. If anyone knows of a site that has a walkthrough, or someone has posted a thread somewhere that tells how to do this, I would very much appreciate a link.

Second, I installed Enlightenment via apt, and added it to my xsessions, so I can choose it in the session manager now. However, it doesn't seem to work properly. According to the tutorial (Mind you I have never used Enlightenment before), left clicking on the background will bring up a menu, as will middle and right clicking. Well, the middle and right click menus work, but the left click menu does not. I can only assume that this is the menu in which all my apps are located, because I cannot seem to get to any of my applications in enlightenment at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any help.

As for Enlightenment, you can generate a menu by doing this: middle-click>maintenance>regenerate menus.

However, you'll need to run e16menuedit to manually populate your menus to the way you like it.

As for the ATI Radeon driver, I'll assume you have already downloaded the driver from ATI for your X11 system (Xfree86 or Xorg).
Disclaimer: the following instructions will *not* apply to your system if you are *not* running debian, so use these instructions at your own risk! I cannot and will not be held responsible if you manage to kill your video card. That said, let's get you some accelerated 3d.

All of these commands are done as root:
alien -d fglrx-(xfree or xorg version).rpm to a .deb file.
dpkg -i --force-overwrite fglrx-(xfree86 or xorg version).deb
cd /lib/modules/your current kernel version/fglrx/build_mod.
If you're using 2.6.11 or higher kernels, you need the 8.12.10.patch for your kernel version.
chmod +x make.sh.
./make.sh <--- this builds the module for you.
cd ..
chmod +x make_install.sh
./make_install.sh <--- this installs the module for you. If no symbol errors reported, then you're good to go.
ctl-alt-f1 <--- switch to main terminal
init 3 or /etc/init.d/kdm stop <--- kills the X-session. if you use gnome, change kdm to gdm.
depmod -ae
modprobe fglrx
init 5 or /etc/init.d/kdm start <--- restart your x-session with accelerated 3d.
Enjoy!

P.S. if these instructions are too simple for you, it's because it pretty much is to me. I did this almost blindfolded with some reading and trial and error to get the best method of building and installing the fglrx module.
