Try using nano filename. Nano is an ncurses editor. I believe the extra commands are listed on the bottom. The ^ symbol means to use the CTRL key with the letter...

Then when you get your critical needs taken care of, go back and study vi(m).

Heh .. quote: (sort of "I know how to use the vi command but I don't know how to save or exit"

Heh .. so what exactly do you know about it ? How to type it and press enter ?

Yes, and study VIM (if you know Vim, chances are you'll also be able to make your work in vi) it's a very useful tool.

In vi, to save your file do <Esc>:w <filename>
To exit vi <Esc>:q
If you edited a file you can combine them <Esc>:wq
To not save the file, just exit <Esc>:q!
