Acidrip will only make divx files that can't be played back on your dvd player unless you are one on the lucky few with divx compatibility on your DVD player.
dvdbackup will work if the DVD is not double layer. It is in the Debian repository and can be installed with "apt-get -t unstable dvdbackup". Unfortunately, the files will be too large for a dvdr disk if the original DVD is double layer.
What I use is dvdbackup in conjuction with dvdshrink running via wine. Dvdshrink will crash on wine if you try to view an encrypted disk. Dvdbackup will make an unencrypted copy on your hard drive that dvdshrink can read. The commands are:

DVDshrink will create an ISO image that can be burned using K3b or other buring software. See this post for more details:
