dual boot & debian installer
 

I have an existing dual boot setup between WinXP & Fedora, using Grub. I tried the latest (02/17/04) debian net installer, but bailed at the boot loader install.

If I let it continue and install grub, is it going to recognize the prior installs, and add those also? I'd rather it didn't nuke my prior setup, so I thought I'd ask someone before continuing.

/dev/hda1 - Win
/dev/hda2 - Fedora
/dev/hda3 - swap
/dev/hda4 - new debian install

Hi,

you should handle that by hand and you shouldn't install the debian bootmanager (lilo or grub). So that you only have one installed in the fedora system where you manage all your boot entries.

So add a new bootentry for debian in the grub conf file and everything should be fine :)

Thanks for the reply. I had initially suspected something like that would be the answer, but the new debian installer wanted to place it's own, or quit the install.

try the following:

I think you have installed your bootloader (grub) on /dev/hda

So install the bootloader of Debian to /dev/hda4 (your debian partition and not into the MBR). So grub shouldn't be touched, you can boot redhat, and add the debian entry to grub :)
